During the Covid lockdown, my partner and I spent hours outside on the balcony enjoying the extra quiet nature (no traffic!) and noticed two tiny little birds hopping from branch to branch in the gumtrees, displaying the most beautiful sunshine yellow amongst all the green, and making the cutest “beep beep” call.
They took turns flying in and out of a rock wall below; it was like clockwork. We became totally obsessed with watching them! With binoculars in hand, we followed their behaviour patterns and watched them collect little insects and lerps (Alex even recorded their calls with his audio equipment haha) until we finally googled the right description and discovered they were “Spotted Pardalotes”.
We were so lucky to get quite close to them as they had nested in a wall next to some steps. I sat for hours with my camera as they tag-teamed in and out of the smallest little hole carrying twigs, and food, preparing their home. I felt so honoured to witness it and completely fell in love with them. We nicknamed our newest neighbours “The Mayweathers”, and from that moment on, I’ve been obsessed with identifying every bird I see. I can now spot a pardalote within a split second just by the way it moves. Even when high up in the trees, they always make me smile.
